Garden Route Road Trip: Itinerary, Costs and Stops (2026)
The Garden Route is South Africa's favourite excuse to drive slowly: lagoons, forest, cliff-top trails and a bridge people jump off on purpose. The surprise is how short it is. The classic stretch from Mossel Bay to Storms River is only about 200 km, so the trick isn't covering distance. It's deciding where to stop. This guide covers the practical bits, with prices in rand checked on 27 September 2026.

The route at a glance
Most people start in Cape Town and finish in Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth), then fly home, or loop back inland via Oudtshoorn and Route 62. Approximate distances and driving times on the N2, without stops:
| Leg | Distance | Drive time |
|---|---|---|
| Cape Town to Mossel Bay | ~385 km | ~4 h |
| Mossel Bay to George | ~50 km | ~40 min |
| George to Wilderness | ~15 km | ~15 min |
| Wilderness to Knysna | ~40 km | ~40 min |
| Knysna to Plettenberg Bay | ~30 km | ~30 min |
| Plettenberg Bay to Storms River | ~70 km | ~50 min |
| Storms River to Gqeberha | ~175 km | ~2 h |
Cape Town to Gqeberha straight through is roughly 750-770 km, a long 8-9 hour day. Don't. Five days is the comfortable minimum; seven lets you add the Oudtshoorn detour without rushing.
When to go
The Garden Route gets rain in every season, which is why it's so green. Summer (December to February) is warm and busy, with local school-holiday crowds and higher prices over Christmas. Autumn and spring are milder and quieter. Winter (June to August) is cooler with shorter days but still very drivable, and whale season along the coast runs roughly from June to November, with Plett and Mossel Bay known for sightings. Pack a rain layer whenever you go.
Car hire, fuel and tolls
- Car hire: economy cars in the Western Cape typically run around R300-R450 a day for a manual, more for an automatic, depending on season and lead time. A one-way drop in Gqeberha usually adds a fee; third-party guides quote roughly R1 200-R1 800, but it varies by company, so check the total before you book. South Africa drives on the left.
- Fuel: in September 2026, 95 unleaded costs R26.05 a litre at the coast. A sizeable increase is expected on 7 October 2026 (projections put it near R29, not yet official). A small car using about 7 litres per 100 km needs roughly 55-60 litres for Cape Town to Gqeberha, so budget around R1 500-R1 800 in fuel, plus more for the Oudtshoorn loop. Stations are full-service: an attendant fills up, and a small tip (R5-R10) is customary.
- Tolls: the only N2 toll plaza on this route is Tsitsikamma, between Plett and Storms River: R73 per car (from 1 March 2026).
Stops, west to east
Mossel Bay. Usually counted as the start of the Garden Route, with a harbour, a museum complex around the old post office tree and a good lunch stop after the long first leg.
George and Wilderness. George has the airport (handy if you want to fly in and skip the first 4 hours). Ten minutes on, Wilderness is all lagoon, beach and forest trails. The Wilderness section of the Garden Route National Park charges R235 per international adult (South Africans R61), valid to 31 October 2026.
Knysna. A lagoon town guarded by two sandstone cliffs, the Heads. Drive up to the viewpoints on the eastern Head, take a lagoon cruise, or book a trip to the Featherbed reserve on the western Head. Oysters are the local obsession.

Plettenberg Bay. Big beaches and Robberg Nature Reserve, a peninsula with a seal colony and three circular trails from a 2.1 km, 30-minute loop to the 9.2 km Point circuit (about 4 hours, not for young children). Entry is R75 per adult at the gate (CapeNature's current listed rate); the reserve is cashless, so bring a card, and from October the last entry is 5pm. Just east of town, Monkeyland and Birds of Eden cost R440 per adult each or R704 for both (2026 rates).

Tsitsikamma and Storms River. Old forest, steep gorges and the famous suspension bridge over the Storms River mouth, about a 2 km return walk with plenty of steps. The bridges were rebuilt and were reported open again in August 2026. The Storms River Mouth fee is R367 per international adult (South Africans R82) until 31 October 2026; the South African rate goes to R85 from 1 November 2026, and the international rate will likely rise too, so check sanparks.org. On the way, Bloukrans Bridge hosts a 216 m bungy jump, listed at about R1 690 in September 2026; confirm with the operator, Face Adrenalin.

Signal gets patchy in the Tsitsikamma gorges and on some forest trails. Screenshot your tickets and download your maps app's offline area before you go. If your trip lives in Voyaij, the itinerary with times, addresses and booking references works offline on every plan, including Free, once it has loaded, so the guesthouse check-in details don't depend on a bar of signal.
The Oudtshoorn detour
From George, the Outeniqua Pass climbs over the mountains to Oudtshoorn in the Klein Karoo, roughly 60 km and an hour away. It's a different world: dry, wide and full of ostriches.
- Cango Caves, about 30 km north of Oudtshoorn: the Heritage Tour is an easy 60 minutes; the Adventure Tour is 90 minutes of crawling and squeezing (ages 8 and up, not for claustrophobes). The official ticket page lists R150-R300 (Heritage) and R200-R320 (Adventure) across ticket types. Book ahead in peak season.

- Ostrich farms: Safari Ostrich Show Farm tours cost R180 per adult online (R225 at the gate), valid to 30 November 2026.
Coming from Cape Town, you can also drive Route 62 through Montagu and Calitzdorp to Oudtshoorn (about 420 km), then drop down to the coast.
Road and safety tips
- Drive in daylight. Rural roads are unlit, and pedestrians and animals are common after dark.
- Watch for roadworks. SANRAL projects on the N2 around George and Wilderness (including the Kaaimans Pass and Gwaiing River bridge works) mean stop-go delays and lower speed limits. Add slack to your drive times.
- Speed limits: 120 km/h on freeways, 100 km/h on other rural roads, 60 km/h in towns, unless signed otherwise. Cameras are common.
- Nothing visible in the car, at viewpoints and in town. Lock valuables in the boot before you park, not after.
- Monkeys and baboons at picnic spots: keep food out of sight and windows up.
- Emergency: police 10111, or 112 from a mobile.
- Power: load-shedding hasn't been a factor since May 2025, but a car charger and power bank help on long days.
- Arriving from abroad? Since 1 July 2026, SARS asks travellers to file an online Traveller Declaration within 24 hours before entering or leaving South Africa. Voyaij adds a reminder to any trip that enters or leaves the country.

Plan it once, carry it offline
A road trip comes as a pile of emails: the flight, the one-way car hire, four or five guesthouses. Forward each confirmation to Voyaij and it builds one day-by-day timeline; add your drive legs and day trips by hand. Voyaij never connects to your inbox; you choose what to forward. Once loaded, the whole plan works offline in the Tsitsikamma gorges and on every plan, Free included.
That empty afternoon? Concierge reads your itinerary, spots days with nothing booked and gaps of three hours or more, and suggests things based on the Traveller DNA you choose (say, Hiking & Trails at a "Slow & deep" pace). Radar, free on every plan, lists places nearby scored against that same DNA: tap "Use my location" or let it use your trip city. And a stop with map coordinates opens straight in Google Maps, Apple Maps or Waze for directions.
